22 January 2012: Shopping on- and offline. IKEA seems to be a resolutely offline store - insisting we spend a certain amount of our weekend standing in its queues. Nevertheless, the procedure is speeded up these days by online browsing. Does it sell the sort of thing I’m looking for? How much does it cost? Do they have any in stock at my local branch? The RSC works the other way round - I browse an offline brochure, then go online to buy. Yesterday we were buying furniture, which involved finding it online, driving over to the local shop to take a look, then returning home to buy it online. Three different models - all offering a blended shopping experience.

21 January 2012: Browsing images, trying to find one that is copyright free and relevant for an invitation. Does copyright on pictures work like copyright on printed materials, I wonder? Do paintings emerge from copyright a certain amount of time after their painter’s death? Or is it the photograph of the painting that attracts the copyright?

19 January 2012: The BBC ran a three-night stargazing special, and linked up with the Citizen Science project Planet Hunters to find a new planet. By the end of the three days, they had about 34 possible candidates, and one confirmed new planet. Amazing when you think that until 1995, no one had spotted any planets at all outside our solar system. Even now there are only (checks Wikipedia) 726.

18 January 2012: In a new form of activism, Wikipedia has gone down for the day in order to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) currently being debated in the US. Google also raised a protest on its home page, while Flickr gave users the option of blacking out pictures for the day.

17 January 2012: Working on EnquiryBlogger with one of my many Wordpress log-ons. Too many sign-ups, too many passwords - my blogs are getting out of hand.

16 February 2011: Thirteen ways to look at a blackbird. The tag is the soul of the Internet. So the picture comes via a Flipboard link on the iPad, and I could follow it up to find out what it means, but I prefer to leave it as a mystery.

15 January 2012: A rare screen-free day. We went to visit friends in Leicestershire, and walked out to see their local Millennium Stone.

14 January 2012: Amazingly, a weekend with no imminent deadlines hanging over me, no marking to wade through, no forms to fill in and no chapters to finish. I celebrated by spending the morning in bed reading trashy novels.

13 January 2012: A new way of browsing Twitter - Portwiture takes words from recent Tweets and links them with Flickr images. It only managed to find three words in my recent Twitter feed, I’m not sure why, so there is a samey quality to my set of images.
